EXPEDITION ARKTIS / ARCTIC DRIFT (original title)

UFA SHOW & FACTUAL GmbH • Documentary & Factual • Das Erste • November 16, 2020

It is the largest Arctic expedition of all time: Trapped in the ice, the German research vessel “Polarstern” is drifting through the Arctic Ocean for a year. More than 300 scientists from 20 nations are conducting research in a region that is virtually inaccessible during the polar night. On the initiative of UFA CEO Nico Hofmann, UFA Show & Factual is on board as the exclusive moving image producer for the entire duration of the expedition. The spectacular footage will be used to create the high-end documentary EXPEDITION ARKTIS, which will be shown on November 16, 2020 at 8:15 pm as part of the ARD theme week “#WIELEBEN – Bleibt alles anders” on the German TV channel Ersten.

Ute Biernat, Managing Director of UFA Show & Factual: “With EXPEDITION ARKTIS, we are documenting a scientific, logistical and human adventure that has never been seen before. Our camera teams accompanied the MOSAiC expedition exclusively for a year, enabling us to create a spectacular close-up of this once-in-a-century expedition. I would particularly like to thank the Alfred Wegener Institute for the trusting cooperation and the opportunity to portray this expedition so comprehensively. I would also like to thank my colleagues at ARD – especially at rbb, NDR and hr – for their collaboration on this unique project. EXPEDITION ARKTIS is UFA Show & Factual’s first high-end documentary project, opening up a whole new portfolio in which we will continue to invest in the future.”

Philipp Grieß, Producer UFA Show & Factual: “The Arctic is an extreme and incredibly captivating place. Absolutely unreal, incredibly quiet, dry and icy cold, almost like an alien planet that is still completely unknown and unexplored. As a documentary filmmaker, I was fascinated from the very first second to shoot in a place where no camera crew had ever spent an entire year. A project that will no longer be possible in the foreseeable future. Because the ice in the Arctic is getting thinner and thinner. The documentary EXPEDITION ARKTIS has no less a goal than to raise awareness of the greatest challenge of our time – climate change.”

Ute Beutler, editor in charge at rbb: “A scientific journey to a largely unknown region of the world over such a long period of time is an extreme challenge for everyone: the crews of the participating ships, the researchers, the organizers and the camera teams. The global pandemic almost caused the project to be canceled. My respect goes to everyone who made MOSAiC and the extensive filming possible. The film takes us into an extreme world and shows how global warming is already dramatically changing the Arctic.”

For a whole year, a total of ten documentary filmmakers accompanied the scientists, their research and the events on board the “Polarstern”. At temperatures of minus 40 degrees, the UFA Show & Factual camera teams film day after day in the Arctic – including almost 140 days in complete darkness during the polar night. With crunching snow under their feet, the filmmakers move around on the floe at the end of the world. In the icy cold, they document every step of the scientific work in the Arctic. This results in unique images that are already unparalleled today. Because the ice at the North Pole is constantly melting.

The documentary begins with the departure of the “Polarstern” in Tromsø, Norway, in September 2019 and takes viewers on a journey to the North Pole. The camera accompanies the exciting search for the perfect floe with exploratory helicopter flights, skidoo tours and the first ascent on foot. It observes the construction of the research city on the ice floe, polar bear encounters, risky situations caused by cracks in the ice, snowstorms at night, the darkness of the polar night and the everyday life of the crew and scientists on board. Documentary windows, narrated close to the respective protagonists, provide an authentic insight into the expedition’s fields of research. Brief diary notes by the expedition leader Markus Rex, interviews, radio recordings and reports from the ship’s logbook structure the film.

Around 300 scientists from 20 nations, over 80 institutions involved, several icebreakers, polar airplanes and helicopters, 389 days of expedition and a budget of around 150 million euros with one goal: a breakthrough in Arctic research. EXPEDITION ARKTIS brings the images of the project of the century to Das Erste.

EXPEDITION ARKTIS is a production of UFA Show & Factual in cooperation with rbb, NDR and HR for Das Erste. Producers of the documentary are Nico Hofmann and Ute Biernat (UFA/UFA Show & Factual). Executive Producer and Head of Reality/Factual Uli Zahn and Producer and Director Philipp Grieß (both UFA Show & Factual) are responsible for the content of the project. Editorial responsibility lies with Ute Beutler (rbb), Marc Brasse (NDR) and Sabine Mieder (hr).

In addition to the high-end documentary, three reports will also be shown in the third programs of rbb, NDR and hr: The films delve deeper into the topics of the MOSAiC expedition from a regional perspective. In EXPEDITION ARKTIS – VON BRANDENBURG AN DEN NORDPOL on November 17, 2020 at 9:15 p.m., rbb will focus on the research of an oceanographer, an atmospheric physicist and a Potsdam geoecologist. With EXPEDITION ARKTIS – WIE NORDDEUTSCHE IM EIS KÄMPFEN UM UNSER KLIMA (EXPEDITION ARKTIS – HOW NORTH GERMANY FIGHTS IN THE ICE FOR OUR CLIMATE), NDR will take a look at the ship’s crew and the helicopter crew, among others, without whom this expedition to the North Pole would not be possible on November 18, 2020 at 9:00 pm. In EXPEDITION ARKTIS – WAS MACHT EIN WETTERMANN IM EIS? on November 19, 2020 at 9:45 p.m., hr accompanies a meteorologist from the German Weather Service in Offenbach on the world’s northernmost on-board weather station.

In cooperation with Fremantle, the high-end documentary ARCTIC DRIFT is also being produced for worldwide distribution.

A movie by Kathrin Dapper

The film accompanies three scientists on the unique MOSAIC expedition to the Arctic led by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research and presents their work above and below the ice. Extreme weather conditions and the complete darkness of the polar night are a constant challenge for the researchers. At the end of January 2020, around 50 scientists set off for the North Pole on board the Russian icebreaker “Dranitsyn”. Their destination: the “Polarstern”. The research vessel will drift through the polar region for a year, frozen in the Arctic ice. Researchers from 20 nations are investigating the major climate issues of our time here; the Arctic is regarded as the weather kitchen of our planet. The unique MOSAIC expedition is led by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research.

On board the icebreaker “Dranitsyn” are oceanographer Janin Schaffer and geoecologist Torsten Sachs, who not only have to get used to the low temperatures and complete darkness of the polar night with the crew and the other passengers. The journey to the research camp demands strong nerves and a lot of patience from everyone. At this time of year, the Arctic is not actually considered navigable. The “Dranitsyn” makes extremely slow progress and consumes a lot of fuel.

Torsten Sachs normally works on the computer at the GeoForschungsZentrum in Potsdam. He is interested in what happens at the boundary between the earth and the atmosphere in the polar region. He wants to fly over the Arctic ice deserts with a complex helicopter towed probe and take measurements. The 42-year-old geoecologist is constantly faced with major challenges due to the cold and the technology.

Janin Schaffer is a climate scientist at heart. The physical oceanographer wants to look under the ice and unlock the secrets of the Arctic Ocean with her data collections.

On the research icebreaker “Polarstern” near the North Pole, Jürgen Graeser, a science technician from Brandenburg, awaits them. The 62-year-old has been drawn to the Arctic again and again for half his life. He is also familiar with the drift, having spent seven months researching on an ice floe in the Central Arctic with a team of Russian experts over ten years ago. With his tethered balloon, also known as “Miss Piggy” because of its distinctive color, he measures the temperatures in the lower layers of the atmosphere.

EXPEDITION ARCTIC - HOW NORTHERN GERMANS FIGHT FOR OUR CLIMATE IN THE ICE | 18.11.2020 | 21:00 - 21:45 | NDR Toggle

Temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees, 150 days of complete darkness and polar bears invading research stations. Since September 2019, scientists and crew have been traveling through the eternal ice on the icebreaker “Polarstern”. MOSAiC, as this adventurous journey is called, is the largest Arctic expedition of all time.

Understanding climate change better

Frozen on a floe, scientists from all over the world collect data around the North Pole. From the sea, from the ice, from the atmosphere. No other region in the world heats up as quickly as the Arctic. What impact does this have on our climate?

North German participants

EXPEDITION ARKTIS – HOW NORTH GERMANS FIGHT FOR OUR CLIMATE IN THE ICE tells the story of the North Germans who were on board the “Polarstern” in the eternal ice. These include the experienced captain Stefan Schwarze, who has been on countless expeditions but has never been frozen in the ice for so long. And expedition leader Markus Rex from Braunschweig, who has always been fascinated by the loneliness of the region. The ever-increasing cracks in the eternal ice are very worrying for the atmospheric researcher.

How did they experience the journey in the Arctic Ocean? EXPEDITION ARKTIS tells their story.

It is the northernmost weather station on the planet. The German research vessel Polarstern is embarking on the largest Arctic expedition of all time for one year. The report accompanies meteorologist Robert Hausen on this exciting mission. During the polar night, he swaps his job at the German Weather Service in Offenbach for one at the North Pole on the icebreaker for several months.

Special challenges await him in the Arctic: Temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius and rapidly changing weather. People’s lives depend on Robert Hausen’s weather assessment. Every day, he advises the captain, helicopter pilots and scientists on which operations are currently possible out on the frozen ocean. He has to rely on his experience here, as the conditions on the ship’s weather station are much more rustic than on the mainland.

For the crew and scientists on the “Polarstern”, his weather forecasts are vital for survival and determine the success or failure of the expedition. There are many dangers lurking in this hostile environment. But some events come as a surprise, even for a modern expedition. The corona pandemic presents everyone with an enormous challenge. You yourself are isolated. But how is the family at home and how long will the return journey be delayed?
