Every year, 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the world’s oceans. That’s the equivalent of one truckload per minute! There is already a gigantic whirlpool of microplastics in the North Pacific – the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. In SAVE THE OCEANS – THE PLASTIC EXPERIMENT, UFA SHOW & FACTUAL and ProSieben follow the trail of plastic and show footage of the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” for the first time.
In cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), the UFA SHOW & FACTUAL team travels to the Garbage Patch in the North Pacific and documents for the first time what it looks like at a depth of 5,000 meters.
Presenter Stefan Gödde and reporter Claire Oelkers guide us through the documentary and use a unique tracking experiment to follow the path of plastic waste from German households to the sea. Where does the yogurt cup really end up when it is thrown into the Yellow Bag in Germany? GPS trackers in Yellow Bags document the astonishing routes taken by German plastic waste.
Each person already consumes 5 grams of plastic per week through their food. In other words, we eat a whole credit card of plastic every week. What can we do about the flood of plastic? What contribution can each of us make? What options are there to clean up the oceans and what are the consequences of microplastics for the human organism? In the report, scientists, experts and environmentalists have their say and report on their fight against the flood of plastic.
GREEN SEVEN REPORT: SAVE THE OCEANS – THE PLASTIC EXPERIMENT is a production of UFA SHOW & FACTUAL for ProSieben. The 90-minute report can be seen on ProSieben on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 8:15 pm.
