At the end of 2020, UFA became the first German entertainment company to announce its commitment to greater diversity in front of and behind the camera. The aim is to reflect the diversity of society in the overall portfolio of UFA programs in a given year by the end of 2024, using the Federal Republic of Germany’s census and other representative studies as a guide. In 2022, UFA will present concrete data for the first time and is now publishing its second On-Screen Diversity Report.
For the survey in 2022, 49 UFA productions and 4,257 roles and actors in them were counted according to their visible, clearly perceptible diversity for the audience. The categories of gender, people of color, LGBTIQ+, people with disabilities and, for the first time in 2022, age were taken into account.
The central results
- Gender: The proportion of people read as women who were visible on screen in UFA productions was 47.2%. The value has increased by +1.9 percentage points compared to the evaluation for the 2021 production year and comes even closer to the target value of an equal distribution between men and women.
- People of Color: 7.8% of roles and actors were PoC in UFA productions in 2022, a slight improvement on the previous year (+0.2).
- LGBTIQ+: The proportion of roles and actors who are queer was 4.6% in 2022, the same as the previous year.
- Diversity in the areas of PoC and LGBTIQ+ is much more visible in leading roles than in supporting roles. This effect was already observed in 2021 and is evident again.
- The proportion of lead roles/lead actors who are female, people of color or belong to the LGBTIQ+ community corresponded to the target values for German society in 2022. This has not yet been achieved for supporting roles/actors.
- People with disabilities: 0.9% of the roles and actors visible on screen in UFA productions had an impairment/disability. This is 0.6 percentage points less than in the previous year.
- Age: 77.1% of roles and actors in UFA productions were 12-49 years old and 22.9% over 50 years old. People over the age of 50 are less common in leading roles/as main actors (17.2%). In the UFA productions counted, women were also less likely to be older than 50 (18.9%) than men (26.4%).
