Cologne, August 5, 2026. The Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin captivates its audience with spectacular visuals, elaborate costumes, and impressive choreography. But before the curtain rises each evening, hundreds of people work behind the scenes to ensure that every performance goes off without a hitch. The documentary *FRIEDRICHSTADT-PALAST – THE WORLD BEHIND THE CURTAIN*, produced by UFA Show & Factual for VOX, follows the crew of this historic theater for a day and reveals what goes on behind the scenes of the show’s big moments.

The focus is on a day at the palace when everything must run smoothly—in front of, on, and behind the world’s largest theater stage. But what the audience experiences as flawless ease is the result of a finely tuned collaboration. The documentary begins with a last-minute sick call from a cast member. What initially sounds like a simple casting change sets off a chain of decisions: roles are reassigned, choreography is adjusted, costumes are prepared, and quick changes are rescheduled. The audience shouldn’t notice any of this on opening night. That is precisely where the true art lies: Guests should be able to enjoy the evening and let themselves be enchanted, while behind the scenes, every effort is made to ensure that everything on stage appears effortless.

While preparations are underway behind the scenes, the film follows artists, technicians, the costume department, the makeup team, stage management, the workshops, and the front-of-house staff through their daily work. What emerges is a complex organism in which a wide variety of trades interlock and work toward a common goal: the perfect show moment. At the same time, the documentary tells the story of a place that has long since become a second home for many employees. A place where reliability, trust, and a sense of family unity form the foundation that makes every Grand Show special.
