About the content: “Deutschland86” picks up the story of Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), his aunt Lenora (Maria Schrader) and their comrades from the HVA three years after Deutschland83. Abandoned by Moscow and hungry for foreign currency, the East German leadership forces its agents into capitalist experiments around the world to save the sinking socialist ship. Banished to Africa in 1983 for his sins, Martin is now sent back into the field. Shady dealings and a dangerous mission take him to South Africa, Angola, Libya, Paris, West Berlin and finally back to the GDR – where he has to make an impossible decision.
Set to the soundtrack of international pop music, the heroes’ journey takes place against the backdrop of perestroika, dirty proxy wars, the fight against apartheid in a year of terror in Western Europe – and, back in the GDR, with the creeping feeling that the end could be near.
