The eight-part event series “Deutschland83” is based on the German-German history of 1983 – the year in which the world came to the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. Against this backdrop, the Stasi sends a young spy to West Germany as an agent for the West. Between peace demonstrations, NATO maneuvers and the New German Wave, he gets caught up in the maelstrom of the secret services and becomes the tip of the scales in the escalating dispute between the two German states.

Deutschland83″ celebrated its official world premiere during the 2015 Berlinale. As part of the “Berlinale Special Series”, festival audiences were able to watch the first two episodes of our event series exclusively in advance. The series met with a broad media response – including internationally. Shortly afterwards, “Deutschland83” became the first German series format ever to make the leap across the Atlantic. The American cable channel “Sundance TV”, which belongs to AMC Networks, secured the rights to our eight-part RTL series, which will go on air in the USA on June 17 (before its German TV premiere in the fall).
Our spy series was also presented to a select audience at the Motion Picture Association of America in Washington D.C. at the beginning of June. On June 15, 2015, “Deutschland83” was also presented to the US press at the Goethe-Institut in New York. The main actors Jonas Nay, Sonja Gerhardt and Ludwig Trepte, director Edward Berger, the two creators Anna Winger (head writer) and Jörg Winger, who is also responsible as producer, producer Nico Hofmann and RTL editor Ulrike Leibfried were also present.

The jury’s statement: “As often as German-German history has been addressed on German television: Never before has it been possible to tell the story with such speed and ingenuity, while at the same time getting to the heart of the schizophrenia of the division of the country with such painful precision. And in a universal language that can be understood both in this country and abroad. ‘Deutschland83’ is nothing less than the beginning of new serial storytelling in Germany.”
February 08, 2016: “Deutschland83” was awarded the Golden Camera for “Best German Multi-part/Miniseries”. Producer Jörg Winger, director Edward Berger, editor Philipp Steffens (Head of RTL Fiction), producer Henriette Lippold and actors Jonas Nay, Ludwig Trepte, Sonja Gerhardt and Nikola Kastner were on hand to accept the award.
