“Deutschland89”, after “Deutschland83” and “Deutschland86” the third season of the national and international award-winning series created by Anna Winger and Jörg Winger, begins with the opening of the Berlin Wall, one of the most fateful days in German history, and the first days in a reunified Germany.
Directed by Randa Chahoud (“Tatort”, “Ijon Tichy”) and Soleen Yusef (“Skylines”, “Der NSU-Prozess”), the film once again stars Jonas Nay, Maria Schrader, Sylvester Groth, Uwe Preuss, Alexander Beyer and Carina Wiese, as well as Anke Engelke, Fritzi Haberlandt, Lavinia Wilson and Florence Kasumba, among others. New to the ensemble are Svenja Jung (“Die Mitte der Welt”, “Beat”) and Corinna Harfouch (“Lara”).
Developed by creators Anna Winger and Jörg Winger, the third season was created in the Writers’ Room with authors Jörg Winger, Steve Bailie, Roger Drew, Ed Dyson, Michael and Lily Idov. The producers are Anna Winger, Jörg Winger and Sebastian Werninger. Co-executive producer is Philipp Driessen, executive producer Daniel van den Berg. Kristian Leschner (“4 Könige”, “Deutschland86”) and Stephan Burchhardt (“Song für Mia”) are responsible for the camera. Filming will continue in Berlin and central Germany until December 2019. The eight new episodes will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Germany, Austria, India and Japan in 2020.
Anna and Jörg Winger, Creators and Executive Producers: “”Deutschland89“ takes us to the year in which Germany had to reinvent itself for the fourth time in the 20th century. For our characters, 1989 also marks a radical break in their biographies, as the disappearance of the HVA and its state also forces them to reinvent themselves. That was great fun for us, because the HVA spies’ fall was enormous. We look forward to surprising our fans at Amazon and around the world with the transformations of their heroes. As always, we were inspired by the true events of the winter of reunification. The fact that today, 30 years later, old certainties are being shaken everywhere and new walls are being erected gives our story something unexpectedly contemporary.”
Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals Amazon Studios: “For us, the Germany series is one of the most unique series produced for German television. We are extremely excited to present the next chapter to Prime members next year. Our goal is to work with the world’s best producers and creatives and Anna Winger and Jörg Winger and the UFA team are an exceptional example of this. With our renewed collaboration, we look forward to bringing their creative vision to our clients and continuing the globally acclaimed Germany series”.
“Deutschland89” is a production of UFA FICTION in cooperation with Amazon, Fremantle and UFA Distribution, supported by German Motion Picture Fund, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Creative Europe Program – MEDIA and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung MDM. Fremantle is responsible for the worldwide distribution of the high-end event series.
The first season of the event series – “Deutschland83” – won numerous awards, including the Adolf Grimme Award and the Golden Camera as well as the International Emmy and Peabody Awards. For his role as Martin Rauch, Jonas Nay received the Golden Nymph at the Festival de Télévision de Monte Carlo in 2016 as best leading actor in a drama series, as well as the German Television Award.
November 9, 1989: The “anti-fascist protective wall” falls and Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay), a notorious GDR spy who has been put out of action, is overwhelmed by the events. Not only does he suddenly lose his identity and home as a result of the peaceful revolution in November 1989, but his comrades in the GDR’s foreign intelligence service (HVA) also become unemployed practically overnight – and are thus faced with the question of how they want to position themselves in this chaos at the finale of the Cold War. Switch to big brother, the KGB? Jump straight to the West to start again as an agent for an enemy service? Use your international contacts as a businessman? Or pack up the hoarded money and gold and secure a place in the sun? As in every crisis, there are plenty of opportunities for our heroes – but there are also new dangers in the opaque thicket of the legendary Wendewinter and the merciless game of spies.
