FremantleMedia vertreibt Deuschland 83 international (engl.)

New series from the Producers of the International Emmy® Award-Winning Generation War

LONDON, 15 January, 2015 – FremantleMedia International today announced its acquisition of the global distribution rights to UFA Fiction’s major new eight-part drama, Deutschland 83. Created by Anna Winger and Joerg Winger, the German-language drama is produced by Joerg Winger and Nico Hofmann (UFA Fiction), and has been commissioned by RTL Television in Germany. Deutschland 83 is a suspenseful coming-of-age story set against the real culture wars and political events of Germany in the 1980s.
It’s 1983. The Cold War is getting hotter. Russian SS20 Missiles in East Germany are pointed West, American Pershing II Missiles will soon be placed in West Germany, pointing East. The threat of nuclear conflict looms.

Deutschland 83 follows Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) as the 24 year-old East Germany native is pulled from the world as he knows it and sent to the West as an undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army, he must gather the secrets of NATO military strategy. Everything is new, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal.

The idea for Deutschland 83 came from the German-American husband and wife duo Anna Winger and Joerg Winger. Anna Winger, the US writer behind the novel, This Must Be the Place, whose essays have appeared in publications such as the New York Times Magazine and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, serves as co-creator and writer. Joerg WInger, a producer at UFA Fiction responsible for one of the most successful and long-running crime series on German television, Soko Leipzig, serves as co-creator and executive producer.

Jens Richter, CEO of FremantleMedia International said, “Deutschland 83 is fast-paced, edgy, humorous and highly entertaining. Anna Winger and Joerg Winger, along with UFA Fiction, have elegantly translated a complex idea into a unique high-end drama which we believe will be one of the biggest dramas of 2015.”

Nico Hofmann, Producer and Chairman of the Board of UFA Fiction said, “This cooperation with FremantleMedia International establishes new opportunities for the distribution of German-language drama. As in the case of our recent international hit Generation War, Deutschland 83 is the kind of high quality entertainment that transcends borders and appeals to audiences around the world. Strategically, UFA Fiction will continue to pursue event programming at this international level.”

Anna Winger and Joerg Winger, co-creators of Deutschland 83 said, "The parallels between 1983 and today are uncanny, both in terms of world politics and popular culture. This is character-driven drama and many of the historical themes we explore in our story, from espionage to radical activism, from nuclear build up to the spread of infectious disease, are also contemporary concerns. Our East German hero's journey resonates far beyond the Berlin Wall. We're pleased that Deutschland 83 strikes a chord with international audiences and we look forward to bringing our series out into the world."

Deutschland 83 is produced by UFA Fiction for RTL Television (in Germany). The series is executive produced by UFA Fiction's Joerg Winger and Nico Hofmann, and directed by Edward Berger and Samira Radsi.
