Who were the people whose thoughts and actions paved the way for the Peaceful Revolution in 1989? The event film, based on the bestseller of the same name by Peter Wensierski, tells the documented story of a group of young people from Leipzig who paved the way for the Peaceful Revolution with their environmental movement and demands for democracy and freedom of opinion. DIE UNHEIMLICHE LEICHTIGKEIT DER REVOLUTION shows in a unique way that a group of young people can achieve great things and that this fact is more relevant than ever.
Henriette Lippold and Benjamin Benedict, producers Ufa Fiction, on the film:
This film about the power of the Leipzig environmental movement is a rarely told chapter on the road to reunification. A movement that gave decisive impetus to the peaceful revolution and made Leipzig what it is today: the city of heroes. This made it all the more important for us to trace the path of these young people as authentically as possible and, thanks to strong local partners, to bring it to life. We not only filmed in Leipzig and the surrounding area, but also cast many of our creative trades such as production design, costume design, make-up design and casting with colleagues who themselves lived as young adults in the GDR in 1988/89 and were able to draw on their own experiences. For an all-German view of history, we brought together Andy Fetscher as a West German director with Thomas Kirchner as an author with an East German biography. The result is a film that consciously presents historical material in a modern and fresh way. A film that tells of awakening and rebellion and whose subject matter is more topical than ever. A film that strengthens our UFA location in Leipzig and at the same time rewrites the way we tell historical stories within UFA. A project of the heart, for which we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in front of and behind the camera!
Janina Fautz, Inka Friedrich, Alexander Hörbe, Ferdinand Lehmann and Timur Bartels play the leading roles. The screenplay was written by Thomas Kirchner (“Das Wunder von Berlin”, “Der Turm“) and directed by Andy Fetscher (“Tatort – Fürchte Dich”, “SOKO Leipzig“).
Leipzig 1988/89: 19-year-old Franka Blankenstein (Janina Fautz) grows up in Leipzig as the child of parents who are loyal to the system. By chance, she meets Stefan Clausnitz (Ferdinand Lehmann), a geriatric nurse, and finds her way into an environmental group that campaigns against the destruction of nature and air pollution in the region under the protection of the church. Franka is fascinated by the cohesion of the group, which lives in an old condemned house. There they plan actions, hold heated discussions, but also live, love and celebrate – under constant observation by the Stasi. When the group, which eventually includes Franka, dares to leave the church and protest in public, their movement becomes political. The young people demand the basic rights of democracy and risk their freedom in the process.
