Part I: THE DIPLOMAT - THE OFFICIAL OFFICE Toggle

DIE DIPLOMATIN – DAS BOTSCHAFTSATTENTAT was first broadcast on Das Erste on April 30, 2016.

In episode 1 of DAS BOTSCHAFTSATTENTAT, a hostage drama shakes the German Embassy and turns it into a highly explosive place. On behalf of the German Foreign Office, diplomat Karla Lorenz(Natalia Wörner) leads a large-scale hostage-taking exercise at the German Embassy in Tunis. What is supposed to be a rehearsal of a serious case becomes a dramatic reality: the staff, including Ambassador Stephan Saalmüller(Hans-Jochen Wagner), as well as Karla and her colleague Nikolaus Tanz(Jannik Schümann) are taken prisoner by terrorists belonging to an Islamist group. The hostage-takers demand the release of their “brothers and sisters” from prison within 48 hours. Thomas Eick(Thomas Sarbacher), political director of the German Foreign Office, tries everything he can to convince the Tunisian government representative Kousri(Renan Demirkan) of his proposed solutions. In the besieged embassy, Karla has only one chance: among the terrorists is a woman who could possibly be the key to saving everyone.

DIE DIPLOMATIN – ENTFÜHRUNG IN MANILA was first broadcast on Das Erste on May 7, 2016.

The crisis team at the Federal Foreign Office is led by Thomas Eick(Thomas Sarbacher), who sends special envoy Karla Lorenz to Manila to search for the missing Germans. Lorenz was until recently deputy ambassador in Bahrain, but was removed from her post prematurely because she once again put her own moral principles above the requirements of the diplomatic service. Now she is supposed to make contact with former rebels and Philippine Defense Minister Jejomar Maceda(David Asavanond), with whom she had an affair years ago. In Manila, Karla discovers the real reason for the Germans’ disappearance. Karla tries to free them from captivity on her own before Jejomar’s troops arrive. A daring undertaking for which Karla risks everything – even her life.

DIE DIPLOMATIN – JAGD DURCH PRAG was first broadcast on Das Erste on March 31, 2018.

Karla Lorenz(Natalia Wörner) succeeds her aunt Alma(Maren Kroymann) as the new German ambassador in Prague. While the official celebrations are still going on, Karla gets caught up in a diplomatic scandal: she gives the deserted US sergeant Sean Miller(Angus McGruther) and his German girlfriend Lena Fischer(Mercedes Müller) shelter in the embassy. The couple claim to have evidence of torture of terror suspects at a US base in the Czech Republic. The American side tries to use political pressure to bring the whistleblower under their control. However, Karla does not follow her experienced aunt’s advice to think about her career first and foremost – even though serious doubts arise about the soldier’s credibility. The crisis-tested diplomat puts everything on the line to find out the truth.

Part IV: THE DIPLOMAT - BAD GAME Toggle

DIE DIPLOMATIN – BÖSES SPIEL was first broadcast on Das Erste on May 04, 2019.

Natalia Wörner as Karla Lorenz was already convincing in the three previous films as a diplomat who acts on international missions, has to prove herself in difficult cases and always follows her moral principles. As the German ambassador in Prague, she bears a great deal of responsibility and has to move confidently in the diplomatic arena. This is not always easy for the unconventional Karla Lorenz.

In a Prague hospital, a 17-year-old German tourist is fighting for her life after an act of violence. Ambassador Karla Lorenz is in a dilemma: of all people, the son of the French ambassador’s family is a suspect. Mother Margo is good friends with Karla. Karla cannot imagine that 18-year-old Philippe is part of a youth group that is said to have abused several young women. And Inspector Horava fails in his investigation due to the boy’s “diplomatic immunity”. Philippe’s father takes advantage of this to obstruct the investigation. But there are also other suspects. Against political resistance, Karla soon tries to find out the truth herself.

Part V: DIE DIPLOMATIN - TÖDLICHES ALIBI Toggle

DIE DIPLOMATIN – TÖDLICHES ALIBI was first broadcast on Das Erste on November 7, 2020

A fatal hit-and-run accident, a clear prime suspect and, of all people, the German ambassador Karla Lorenz
(Natalia Wörner) in Prague gives him an alibi. In the fifth part of the successful series, director Roland Suso Richter skillfully combines a suspenseful criminal case with political thriller elements. The screenplay by Christoph Busche raises questions about morality and integrity in the setting of modern research into artificial intelligence. And the ambassador also has to ask herself how much guilt people take on for their careers. Visual designer Max Knauer is responsible for the cinematic look.

A young motorcyclist dies after an accident on the streets of Prague – Karla Lorenz (Natalia Wörner) becomes involved in this tragic event through a professional meeting with an employee of the Czech Ministry of Economics at the time of the crime: Daniel Stokr (Stipe Erceg) was the alleged hit-and-run driver. Karla gives him an alibi. The victim is the son of a police officer (Kasem Hoxha). Inspector Horava (Alexander Beyer) has no doubt about Stokr’s guilt. Like Karla, Stokr is working on a prestigious German-Czech project on artificial intelligence in the medical sector. And suddenly he is also suspected of embezzlement – the project is unexpectedly on the brink of collapse. The accident, the embezzlement – everything seems to be connected and all the clues lead to him, as Karla’s colleague Nikolaus Tanz (Jannik Schümann) and Stokr’s superior, State Secretary Lenka Zdenek (Andrea Osvárt), are convinced. Karla comes under pressure. Unwavering at her side is Nikolaus, who, together with Karla, uncovers the surprising truth …

Part VI: DIE DIPLOMATIN - MURDER IN ST. PETERSBURG Toggle

THE DIPLOMAT – MURDER IN ST. PETERSBURG was first broadcast on Das Erste on September 18, 2021

Russian authorities have a suspected whistleblower abducted on German soil – this provocative breach of the law leads to a political game of nerves in which “The Diplomat” supports the Foreign Office. Natalia Wörner, alias Karla Lorenz, is personally involved in this explosive case: the abductee, played by Beat Marti, is a childhood friend who the Russian side accuses of a “murder in St. Petersburg”. Now she has to find out what the truth is. Director Roland Suso Richter has staged this highly suspenseful investigative story in the style of a modern political thriller. Spectacular locations such as a former Cold War radar station provide the sixth film in the series with a visually stunning setting.

A man lands at BER airport with his six-year-old daughter from St. Petersburg, fearing for his life: the German-Russian journalist Kolja Petrow (Beat Marti), a childhood friend of Karla Lorenz (Natalia Wörner). Instead of the diplomat, who knows nothing about his visit, a Russian secret service commando is waiting for him and little Manja (Rena Harder). Before the kidnappers turn him in, Kolja makes a data stick disappear and hides Manja in a rental car. When the police discover the girl shortly afterwards, there is no trace of the kidnapped girl. However, a telephone number that Kolja has written on Manja’s arm leads to Karla. Although she is surprised to hear from him in this way after a long period of silence, she takes his daughter in. While her boyfriend Jan (Alexander Beyer) takes care of the girl, Karla supports the crisis team, including BND officer Weimer (Anna von Haebler). They find out that Kolja is being held in the Russian embassy. When State Secretary Wagner (Thomas Heinze) exerts foreign policy pressure, Russian state media send a surprising explanation: Petrov is said to have fled because he murdered his wife in St. Petersburg. Karla, who has known the suspect since childhood, thinks this is a pretext. In fact, he was carrying evidence of Russian influence by their secret services on important political elections in
Germany, which is to be covered up…

Part VII: THE DIPLOMAT - MISSING IN ROME Toggle

DIE DIPLOMATIN – VERMISST IN ROM was broadcast on September 23, 2023 at 20:15 on Das Erste.

A construction botch-up with serious consequences and a missing expert report: How far would the truth and good words go to bring the perpetrators to justice? This is the question young activists ask themselves in the new film of the ARD Degeto series DIE DIPLOMATIN, produced by UFA Fiction and directed by Roland Suso Richter. The daughter of a German multimillionaire is kidnapped at a concert. A dramatic story comes to light that also involves the Vatican Bank. The kidnappers are only negotiating with Karla Lorenz (Natalia Wörner), who has recently taken up her post as ambassador in Rome. She must prevent an escalation. Filming took place in Rome in 2022.

Nikolaus Tanz (Jannik Schümann), Karlas’ friend, Czech policeman Jan Horava (Alexander Beyer) and State Secretary Burkhard von Dorssen (Michael Ihnow) are also involved in the seventh film in the series. Other roles are played by Francis Fulton-Smith, Ulrike Tscharre, Greta Geyer, Clelia Sarto, Sophia Mercedes Burtscher, Karla Trippel, Adriano Bonamore, Martin Penalozza Cecconi and others.

Synopsis:
Ambassador Karla Lorenz (Natalia Wörner) has not been in Rome long when a brutal kidnapping takes place: Hooded men kidnap a young singer in the middle of a performance at the Teatro Nove Occupato. The girl in question is Ines Felting (Greta Geyer), the daughter of a German building contractor. Karla’s closest colleague Nikolaus Tanz (Jannik Schümann) also falls into the hands of the activist hostage-takers. The ransom demanded is intended to help relatives of the victims of a house collapse; they also demand disclosure of the covered-up construction defects. Did the lenders, including the Vatican Bank, also have access to the report? Karla has as little faith in the police as she does in the populist Minister of the Interior. Even with the support of her partner Jan (Alexander Beyer), Karla wants to end the hostage drama without violence.

Part VIII: THE DIPLOMATESS IN ROME - DEATH OF A NUN Toggle

DIE DIPLOMATIN IN ROM – TOD EINER NONNE will be broadcast on August 23 on the German TV channel Ersten

In order to solve the death of a young German nun in Rome, Natalia Wörner risks a huge public stir as ambassador Karla Lorenz in the Italian capital in DEATH OF A NUN. Together with Clelia Sarto as the investigator, she struggles to uncover the truth in the cover-up of abuse cases. Director Roland Suso Richter staged the exciting screenplay by Rebecca Mahnkopf, who allows tradition and modernity to collide in this story. Cinematographer Max Knauer impressively captured the magnificent but equally threatening backdrop of a time-honored order.

Alongside Natalia Wörner and Clelia Sarto, Alexander Beyer, Michael Ihnow, Maria Matschke Engel, Susanne Wuest, Karla Trippel, Frederik von Lüttichau, Maximilian Dirr and Benjamin Sadler can be seen in the main roles in the episodes.

Rome, the Eternal City: When the body of a young German nun is found in the convent of the “Patronesses of the Virgin Mary”, Micha Hauser (Frederik von Lüttichau), a friend of the deceased, alerts the German ambassador Karla Lorenz (Natalia Wörner). Although the order is considered progressive, when the diplomat learns that the superior (Susanne Wuest) and Cardinal Köhlbauer (Benjamin Sadler) only want to investigate the case internally, she fears that the true background to the woman’s death is being covered up, despite the order’s progressiveness. Karla encounters a wall of silence. While even the Vatican gets involved and the German government, fearing for diplomatic relations, urges restraint, Karla puts everything on the line and, with the support of Italian chief inspector Ricarda Motte (Clelia Sarto), stumbles upon a web of cover-up, abuse of power and blackmail. Time is running out for Karla when another nun disappears without a trace…

Part IX: THE DIPLOMAT IN ROME - RAUBGRÄBER (AT) Toggle

The shooting of DIE DIPLOMATIN IN ROM – RAUBGRÄBER (AT) was completed in October 2025

DIE DIPLOMATIN is embarking on its ninth case – this week, filming on the new movie in the successful series is being completed in the Italian capital Rome. The film is being produced by UFA Fiction on behalf of ARD Degeto Film. In DIE DIPLOMATIN IN ROM, Natalia Wörner as diplomat Karla Lorenz not only has a new colleague at her side in Langston Uibel as Florian Simmel, but also has to deal with helping German citizens in need in a diplomatic yet unconventional way, while at the same time smoothing the waters on the international stage. Director Anna-Katharina Maier and Director of Photography Josef Mittendorfer stage Christian Schnalke’s screenplay as a showpiece worth seeing between remote excavation sites and pulsating places in the cosmopolitan city.

Natalia Wörner and Langston Uibel are joined by Clelia Sarto, Luisa Gaffron, Alexander Beyer, Daniel Christensen and others.

Synopsis: German archaeologist Simone Fechter (Luisa Gaffron) seeks refuge in the embassy because she feels persecuted and her doctoral supervisor and excavation director Thilo Kräutner (Daniel Christensen) has disappeared. Karla Lorenz (Natalia Wörner) sees no way of taking her in. When the pregnant Simone Fechter disappears shortly afterwards, Karla feels responsible. She seeks contact with Commissario Ricarda Motte (Clelia Sarto), who is also investigating the murder of a local excavation worker. Apparently, the case concerns the spectacular discovery of an Etruscan warrior figurine from pre-Roman times, which can fetch horrendous prices on the black market. Cultural loot is also the focus of an official assignment: Karla and her new cultural attaché Florian Simmel (Langston Uibel) organize the return of ancient Roman ceramics from Germany. What is intended as a sign of restitution threatens to fail due to the accusations of fencing by the German archaeologists. Against the instructions from Berlin, Karla asserts her unbureaucratic attitude and descends into the catacombs of the Eternal City to investigate.
