Three sisters, 100 years of Germany and an estate in the Lower Rhine province: “Wir sind doch Schwestern” tells the story of the lives of three old ladies who meet again after many years of family discord on the eldest’s 100th birthday and look back on a whole century of war, love, quarrels and scandals.
Our historical family drama is loosely based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Anne Gesthuysen and is directed by Till Endemann with a screenplay by Grimme Award winner Heide Schwochow. The three Janssen sisters are portrayed by a total of nine actresses, who show them in three periods of their lives together around 1915, 1950 and 1994.
Synopsis: What do you do when one sister turns 100 and the other hasn’t spoken to her for four decades? For 98-year-old Martha(Gertrud Roll), the matter is clear: she has the jubilarian Hiltrud(Hildegard Schmahl) drive up to “little” Betty(Jutta Speidel), who is also 84, against her will in order to finally reconcile the feuding sisters.
The last time the three saw each other in court was over 40 years ago during the trial of CDU politician Heinrich Verhoeven(Benjamin Sadler). Verhoeven, accused of adultery with his housekeeper Betty, was only acquitted due to the false testimony of Hiltrud and Martha. Having to lie under oath for her younger sister – a red rag for Hiltrud, who has never spoken to Betty since.
But the old ladies have to realize that each has her own truth. All three experienced two world wars, lost and left husbands and were not free of false morals. And worse still, they all share a heavy guilt. But it turns out that it’s never too late for regret. Especially when you have sisters like these who are determined to celebrate their next 100th birthday together!
