Death on the high seas: On a September night, a young cadet goes overboard on a navy sail training ship. How did this happen? This is the story of the television film “Death of a Cadet”, directed by Grimme Award winner Raymond Ley. He also wrote the screenplay together with Hannah Ley. The film is based on true events and inspired by the non-fiction book “Our Child is Dead” by author and journalist Dona Kujacinski. The leading actress is Maria Dragus, who has already won several awards – including the German Film Award for “The White Ribbon” and was a “Shooting Star of European Film” in 2014. Lisa Hrdina, Harald Schrott and Miroslaw Baka, among others, played alongside her. Producers on behalf of NDR and ARD Degeto are Nico Hofmann and Marc Lepetit. The film was shot in Gdynia and the surrounding area (Bay of Gdansk, Poland), with the ship Dar Mlodziezy serving as the backdrop.
After leaving school, young Lilly Borchert (Maria Dragus) wants to study medicine and see the world. She is accepted into the navy and fights her way through the first few weeks of basic training. Despite some reservations about Lilly’s suitability, she is accepted as a cadet on board a large sail training ship. The regular crew under Captain Krug (Harald Schrott) and the young cadets, who are aiming for a career as an officer, form a close-knit community. The masculinity, the lack of sleep, the drill – all this is alien to Lilly. Klara (Lisa Hrdina), also a medical officer candidate, becomes Lilly’s adversary among the cadets. Lilly defends herself against attacks from all sides, bites through, writes to get her frustrations off her chest and counts the days until her birthday, when she is allowed to visit her parents. But she suffers from severe abdominal pain and sleep problems. The instructors’ assessments of Lilly don’t get any better: “There’s no sign of her suitability as an officer” – “She keeps falling asleep” – “No team spirit – no leadership personality”.
One night – a good 24 hours before her 19th birthday – Lilly takes over the duty of a comrade at the lookout post. Suddenly, some cadets think they hear a scream. It is 11.43 pm, the night is pitch black and the water is 15 degrees. The crew shout their orders against the wind: Man overboard! Lilly is no longer in her position. Initial rescue efforts are unsuccessful and the search remains fruitless. Questions arise: How could Lilly have crashed? The journalist Hartmut Kerber (Miroslaw Baka), who is present on the ship, begins to investigate. Will he find out what happened that night?
Maria Dragus, Lisa Hrdina, Harald Schrott and Miroslaw Baka are joined by Robert Gonera (Harald Borchert), Alexander Grünberg (Instructor Franzen), Peter Cieslinksi (Achim Wiedemann), Lola Klamroth (Anja Kroll), Thea Rasche (Nadja), Rana Farahani (Camille Laurent), Max Schimmelpfennig (Stefan Müller), David Hürten (Olaf), Malik Blumenthal (Micha Haverkamp) and others in front of Dominik Berg’s camera.
“Tod einer Kadettin” is a UFA FICTION production commissioned by NDR and ARD De geto for Das Erste and is funded by nordmedia Film- und Mediengesellschaft Niedersachsen/Bremen mbH. It is edited by Marc Brasse (NDR) and Christine Strobl (ARD Degeto).
In addition to the television film, Raymond Ley made a 30-minute documentary about the case of Jenny Böken. She was 18 years old when she went overboard the Gorch Fock on the night of September 3 to 4, 2008 for unexplained reasons.
