UFA FICTION GmbH • Series & Sequences • Das Erste • since 2016
DIE EIFELPRAXIS is a UFA FICTION production commissioned by ARD Degeto for the "Endlich Freitag im Ersten" slot. It focuses on Jessica Ginkel, who has joined Simon Schwarz, alias country doctor Dr. Chris Wegner, as the new care assistant Vicky Röver and has started a new life with her daughter in her old home town of Monschau.

Episode 1: "The Eifel Practice - First Aid from Berlin" Toggle

Vera Mundt (Rebecca Immanuel) wants to work as a nurse again after a ten-year break. The job offer from country doctor Chris Wegner (Simon Schwarz) in the Eifel offers a new opportunity: a care assistant in the country doctor’s practice! More salary, more responsibility! Vera packs her suitcase and children – despite the objections of her 16-year-old son Paul (Tom Böttcher) – and moves from Berlin to the Eifel. But unlike his little sister Mia (Mascha Schrader), Paul has no desire for country life. So Vera is not only fighting for family peace, but also with her new boss. The tight schedule that Chris sets for her is hardly compatible with Vera’s way of working. She takes time for her patients and pays close attention. Chris dislikes Vera’s time management, even though he realizes that Vera’s unconventional way of dealing with patients is successful. Nevertheless, additional human services are not billable. But he won’t admit this to Vera. Vera manages to save her patient Hannes Limburg (Max Herbrechter), whom she is treating after a car accident, from making a serious mistake. Even though son Paul discovers during a night-time foray that cool friends are not only to be found in Berlin, Vera will have to face the balancing act between work and family again and again.

Other roles are played by Karolina Lodyga, Janek Rieke, Anna Böttcher, Felix von Manteuffel, Karin Giegerich and others.

Episode 2: "The Eifelpraxis - A dose of life" Toggle

Max Bogner (Leonard Proxauf) has been confined to a wheelchair since a car accident. He has lost all zest for life, isolates himself from the outside world and refuses to accept Vera’s help. During Chris and Vera’s arguments about methods that could help Max, they fail to see what really torments him and leads to self-hatred. Vera fights tooth and nail to get through to the 20-year-old and make him understand that he could never have influenced his fate. It becomes increasingly clear that there is a lot of affection behind all the arguments between Vera and Chris – if it weren’t for the attractive stranger who suddenly intervenes.

Tanja Wedhorn, Marie Anne Fliegel, Dagmar Sachse and others also play roles in other episodes.

Paul’s school friend Felix (Ludwig Simon) is diagnosed with a bone marrow dysfunction. A bone marrow donation is urgently needed – but the parents’ test results are unfortunately negative, ruling them out as donors. However, Chris has also searched for a potential donor in the central registry. When Vera learns that a suitable candidate has actually been found in the immediate vicinity, she pricks up her ears. Meanwhile, Vera’s private life is in a state of disarray. The sudden appearance of Michael Mundt (Jan Sosniok), father of Mia and Paul, upsets both Vera and Paul, who initially wanted nothing more to do with his father after his parents’ divorce.

Vera (Rebecca Immanuel) has an eye for people who particularly need her care. In order to help the young Eifel ranger Hanna (Jytte-Merle Böhrnsen), who wants to avoid an urgent operation, the care assistant makes a house call without further ado. Unfortunately with dramatic consequences: It goes unnoticed that a single pensioner has fallen during the night and urgently needs help. Chris (Simon Schwarz) has now had enough of Vera’s intuitive and impulsive nature: either she follows his instructions – or he quits. However, Vera doesn’t want to compromise when it comes to personal responsibility and professional standards. Now that son Paul (Tom Böttcher) and daughter Mia (Mascha Schrader) have settled into life in Monschau, of all times, the end is looming. Vera has to jump over her shadow to change her boss’s mind.

Episode 5: "The Eifel Practice - Broken Hearts" Toggle

Vera gets a special present for her birthday: Chris gives her the whole day for just one patient! But he’s a tough one: a retired policeman (Hermann Beyer) who reports everything and everyone to the police. Vera experiences first-hand just how quickly this can happen during a house call. Her patient causes her car to be towed away for a triviality and taken off the road for lack of an MOT sticker. However, Vera doesn’t let her anger stop her from helping the unpopular loner, who suffers from life-threatening broken heart syndrome. She wants to find out what broke his heart. Her boss Chris is also suffering from heartbreak: he fears that Vera will choose Henning (René Steinke).

Other roles are played by Karolina Lodyga, Janek Rieke, Tom Böttcher, Mascha Schrader and others.

Episode 6: "The Eifel Practice - Desire for Revenge" Toggle

In “Rachegelüste”, some of the people around Vera are carrying around a secret, which is why she has to be prepared for big surprises: Paul (Tom Böttcher) plunges into an affair with his German teacher Claire Bonin (Kristin Suckow), who is a patient of the care assistant. “House friend” Daniel (Aleksandar Radenkovic) shocks Vera by revealing the real reason for his stay in Monschau: He is looking for a car driver who critically injured his brother Sören in an accident and committed a hit-and-run. When Sören (Yuri Völsch) unexpectedly turns up on her doorstep, Vera has a double mission: she has to look after Sören and stop Daniel’s vendetta. What upsets her is that her close friend Daniel has lied to her. Henning (René Steinke), who Vera wants to get involved with, is also carrying something around with him. Chris (Simon Schwarz), of all people, knows what it is. He sees a chance to get rid of his rival after all.

“Aufbruch” begins with Vera Mundt in an unstable emotional state: Henning has gone back to Tanzania to work there – and to put the past behind him before he starts something new. And yet Vera has only just told Dr. Wegner that she and Henning want to give it a try… But that’s not all: Vera is at loggerheads with her son Paul (Tom Böttcher) and has fallen out with her best friend Danuta (Karolina Lodyga). A distraction arrives in the form of Franziska Loer (Christina Hecke), mother of two underage daughters, who is now being treated by Dr. Wegner. She suffers from severe pain and has been to several doctors, but no one has been able to help her. Unbeknownst to her, she is burdening her two daughters with far too much responsibility – especially Edda (Mia Kasalo), the older one, is suffering. Chris takes on the complicated case, and Vera is once again called upon to go far beyond her medical knowledge.

Episode 8: "The Eifelpraxis - matters of the heart" Toggle

Vera (Rebecca Immanuel) is used to multitasking thanks to her job in the Eifel practice. In her private life, she is facing several crises: Her son Paul (Tom Böttcher) has become distant, her friend Danuta’s (Karolina Lodyga) affair is causing rumors and Fritz (Dennis Hofmeister), the best friend of Daniel’s little brother Sören (Yuri Völsch), suffers a sudden respiratory arrest. After initial examinations, everything seems physically normal. But this diagnosis is not enough for Vera. The experienced care assistant suspects a rare hereditary disease, known as Brugada syndrome, behind the recurring heart failure. When the teenager also comes under enormous emotional pressure because he learns that his father (Andreas Pietschmann) was presumably to blame for Sören’s accident and is suspected of the hit-and-run, he collapses again. Together with her boss Chris (Simon Schwarz) and Dr. Julia Hamacher (Anja Schneider), Vera now wants to act as quickly as possible and aims for a life-saving operation.

Vera (Rebecca Immanuel) is happy: Paul (Tom Böttcher) is living with her and Mia (Mascha Schrader) under the same roof again. However, the circumstances have changed: Since Paul is paying a share of the rent, he confidently lays claim to the new rooms. Mia doesn’t want to be left behind either. Soon Vera doesn’t recognize her protesting little nestling! In the Eifel practice, the care assistant has to deal with a stubborn family. During her home visit to the farmer’s wife Bärbel Kuhn (Gitta Schweighöfer), who suffers from lung disease, Vera notices her son’s strange symptoms: Simon (Enno Hesse), who runs the farm almost single-handedly, is showing symptoms of MS. Only under pressure from his heavily pregnant wife Lena (Christin Nichols) does he allow himself to be examined by Chris (Simon Schwarz). Simon does not want to face up to the seriousness of the situation. It is only when Vera realizes what a burden the young man is really suffering from that she is able to help.

Dr. Chris Wegner (Simon Schwarz) could really use some support in the Eifel practice. Vicky from Berlin (Jessica Ginkel), who is currently visiting Monschau with her daughter Kim (Carlotta von Falkenhayn), would be an ideal candidate for the vacant position of care assistant. However, Chris hardly dares to hope that she might be interested in the job. The self-confident daughter of pharmacist Heidelinde Röver (Corinna Kirchhoff) turned her back on her homeland a long time ago and made it all the way to the famous Charité hospital. So what could possibly appeal to her about returning to the provinces? Vicky is also needed in her family. She soon discovers that her mother has serious health problems. Despite mysterious symptoms of paralysis and severe pain, the 65-year-old has to be convinced to get help.

In order to get the loan for a modest but cozy dream house, she needs a guarantee. Although it would be easiest to accept her mother Heidelinde’s (Corinna Kirchhoff) offer, Vicky stubbornly refuses. The care assistant experiences what resistance to advice means with a patient: Gym operator Maik (Vincent von Linden) ignores bouts of weakness and other alarm signals from his body. He fears more for his Superman image than for his health. Vicky, however, uses her experience and tenacity to deduce a stigmatized clinical picture that also occurs in men who appear to be in top shape.
