Diversity Summit 2020

No other medium entertains and informs as many people in this country every day as television. But do fictional and non-fictional television programs also reflect the diversity of our society? What is the current state of visibility and equality in terms of disability, sexual orientation and identity, cultural background and gender? With the first Diversity Summit on March 23, 2020 in Cologne, the television industry is now putting these topics on the agenda itself.

German television: As diverse as its audience?

No other medium entertains and informs as many people in this country every day as television. But do fictional and non-fictional television programs also reflect the diversity of our society? What is the current state of visibility and equality in terms of disability, sexual orientation and identity, cultural background and gender? With the first Diversity Summit on March 23, 2020 in Cologne, the television industry is now putting these topics on the agenda itself. On the initiative of UFA CEO Nico Hofmann and DWDL Editor-in-Chief Thomas Lückerath, leading production companies and TV broadcasters have joined forces to take a critical look at how they are living up to their responsibilities. „With great reach comes responsibility for broadcasting awareness,“ emphasizes Nico Hofmann: „The Diversity Summit 2020 in Cologne is of course neither the beginning nor the end of an important debate about diversity in television. It is a further contribution to the important social discourse, in this case privately supported by broadcasters and production companies and backed by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.“

In addition to UFA and DWDL.de, the Diversity Summit 2020 is backed by Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, ProSiebenSat.1, Bavaria Fiction and Bavaria Film, with the support of ITV Studios Germany and Seapoint Productions as well as the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

The panel guests at the Diversity Summit include actress, producer and co-founder of the „MaLisa Stiftung“ Maria Furtwängler, actress ChrisTine Urspruch („Tatort Münster“, „Dr. Klein“) and presenter Nazan Eckes („RTL Extra“).

The Diversity Summit is an accessible event and will be accompanied by sign language interpreters.
