The novel adaptation was released in German cinemas on December 25, 2018 – starring Julius Weckauf (the young Hans-Peter Kerkeling), Luise Heyer (mother Margret) and Sönke Möhring (father Heinz). After “Ich bin dann mal weg”, this is the second bestselling novel by Hape Kerkeling to be made into a film by UFA FICTION.
About the content: “Der Junge muss an die frische Luft” (The boy needs to get some fresh air) tells the story of the childhood of the now famous entertainer Hape Kerkeling. The chubby, 9-year-old Hans-Peter grows up in the security of his cheerful and party-loving relatives. He practises his great talent for making others laugh every day in his grandmother Änne’s store. But unfortunately not everything is rosy. Dark shadows cast over the boy’s everyday life when his mother becomes increasingly depressed after an operation. An incentive for Hans-Peter to continue perfecting his comedic talent. The touching childhood story of one of Germany’s greatest entertainers, Hape Kerkeling.
The film is directed by Oscar winner Caroline Link (e.g. “A Year in Winter”, “Nowhere in Africa”, “Beyond Silence”) from a screenplay by Ruth Toma (e.g. “3096 Days”, “Solino”). Judith Kaufmann ‘s camera brings together a great ensemble of actors, including Luise Heyer, Sönke Möhring, Hedi Kriegeskotte, Ursula Werner, Joachim Król, Rudolf Kowalski, Maren Kroymann and Diana Amft . The role of nine-year-old Hape Kerkeling is played by Julius Weckauf, who won over audiences with his great enthusiasm and comedic talent following a nationwide casting campaign. The portrayal of the young, blond “Wonneproppens” is his first ever cinema role.
Following the huge success of “Ich bin dann mal weg”, UFA FICTION and FEINE FILME are co-producing with Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany for the second time a bestseller by Hape Kerkeling. Producers are Sebastian Werninger, Nico Hofmann (UFA) and Hermann Florin (FEINE FILME), producer is Tobias Timme. The film was supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, the FFA – German Federal Film Board and the DFFF – German Federal Film Fund.
Hape Kerkeling: “Caroline Link devotes herself to the material with great affection and all her skills. Her team and the cast are made up of the best in our industry. The little leading actor Julius has wit, charm and is very talented. The best prerequisites for a good movie. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Caroline Link, director: “Rarely has a story touched me as much as this one. The childhood of one of Germany’s greatest entertainers. Full of humour, joie de vivre and at the same time shaped by painful and traumatizing experiences in the young Federal Republic of Germany in the 60s and 70s. A small, blond, chubby boy who has the special ability to make others laugh and who tries to save his world with this gift.”
