The goosebump-inducing thriller “The Joshua Profile” tackles a highly charged topic that is already a frightening reality: predictive policing – anticipating crimes before they happen! In both the book and the film, the unsuccessful writer, law-abiding citizen and loving father Max Rhode (Torben Liebrecht) is at the center of the action. In just a few days, he is to commit a horrific crime based on the findings of the new pre-crime software program Joshua. Only he doesn’t know anything about it yet. A gripping chase ensues, a race against time across shimmering hot Berlin, where in the end nothing is as it seems.
Sebastian Fitzek, who plays a role as a book salesman in the film, is currently Germany’s most successful thriller author. He published his first psychological thriller in 2006: “Die Therapie” became a bestseller, as did all of his subsequent books. To date, eight million copies of his works have been published and translated into 24 languages. Fitzek is also published in England and the USA. “Der Seelenbrecher”, “Die Therapie” and “Passagier 23” have been the subject of several theater adaptations. Sebastian Fitzek has been nominated twice for the Glauser Prize and has won the Golden Lovelybooks Readers’ Prize for several years. He has also been awarded the “Hörkules” and is the winner of the 2016 European Prize for Crime Fiction.
“The Joshua Profile” was directed by Oscar-winner Jochen Alexander Freydank (“Tatort”, “Kafka’s The Burrow”). The producer is Jörg Winger (“Deutschland 83/86”), the executive producer is Henriette Lippold (“Charité”). The screenplay was written by Jan Braren (“Homevideo”, “Mitten in Deutschland: NSU”). The RTL editorial team is headed by Nico Grein under the direction of Philipp Steffens. In addition to Torben Liebrecht, Franziska Weisz (“Tatort”, “Homeland”), Armin Rohde (“Kleine Haie”, “St. Pauli Nacht”, “Alleingang”), Inez Bjørg David (“Die Toten vom Bodensee”), Lina Hüesker (“Hilfe, ich hab meine Lehrerin geschrumpft”), Arnd Klawitter (“Die Stadt und die Macht”, “Oh Boy”) and Max Hopp (“Der gleiche Himmel”, “Bella Block”) as well as the internationally renowned Peter Mygind (“Borgen – gefährliche Seilschaften”, “Kommissarin Lund”).
Jörg Winger, Managing Director and Producer UFA FICTION: “For me, our adaptation of Fitzek’s bestseller ‘The Joshua Profile’ is a successful attempt to make a film that uses extreme suspense and gripping characters to involve us in a topic that will provide us with plenty to talk about in the coming years: how will we reconcile our need for freedom and security with new technologies? We all carry our little Stasi spies in our pockets, are monitored at every turn by video cameras of all kinds, and our behavior is analyzed by umpteen companies around the world and – as in ‘The Joshua Profile’ – used to predict future events. Despite all the opportunities that these technologies offer, I see this as an essential threat to our fundamental values. Sebastian Fitzek has used his unerring instinct to tackle this subject in an extremely entertaining way and I am very proud that he has trusted us to adapt his material. I am also very grateful to Philipp Steffens, Frank Hoffmann and Nico Grein at RTL and my colleague Henriette Lippold at UFA Fiction that we were able to realize a joint vision for a real Hitchcock plot in keeping with our times. Jan Braren has delivered a great script and director Jochen Alexander Freydank has realized it congenially. I think we have excellent prospects of our viewers being entertained in an exciting way – and that they will take a second look at the camera installed in their TV or their funny flashing smartphone after enjoying the movie.”
