A big anniversary was celebrated in 2018: “SOKO Munich” had its 40th birthday! On Monday, January 2, 1978, the hit series – then still called “SOKO 5113″ – was broadcast on ZDF for the first time. SOKO Munich has enjoyed great popularity for over 40 years, with around 9.73 million viewers tuning in for the TV launch in 1978.

For almost 38 years, the series bore the name“SOKO 5113”, which referred to the telephone extension of SOKO chief Dieter Schenk. Schenk still advises SOKO Munich today. Due to its great success, SOKO spin-offs were also created in other cities (including“SOKO Leipzig”, “SOKO Kitzbühel”, “SOKO Cologne”) – in order to standardize the series titles, the respective cities were included in the title and so“SOKO 5113” finally became“SOKO Munich” in January 2016.
