MDR and UFA Serial Drama take aim at student embarrassments and academic absurdities in the mockumentary IRGENDWAS MIT MEDIEN.
IRGENDWAS MIT MEDIEN will explore the everyday madness of young students, focus on their worries and hardships as well as their overconfidence or search for meaning and, last but not least, revolve around the question: Will the “seriousness of life” soon catch up with me? The focus here is deliberately on the world of young adults: whether moving out, the first university party, the first study courses or the many questions from (grand)parents such as “And what do you actually do with that?” – the typical challenges of growing up.
The idea came from Jano Kaltenbach and Mirko Muhshoff, who developed the format and wrote the scripts. They are also directing and playing the main roles. The two all-round talents studied in Weimar themselves and developed the series at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, where it will also be set.

And with UFA, we have a commissioned producer with a great deal of expertise in the field of fictional series production.”

Lennart (Mirko Muhshoff), self-proclaimed child prodigy and high-flyer, goes to university after leaving school and studies: SOMETHING TO DO WITH MEDIA. As he settles into his new life, he keeps bumping into Simon (Jano Kaltenbach), a long-term student who is mainly annoyed by Lennart. More or less together, the two have to overcome the challenges of studying and growing up. Meanwhile, Lennart’s long-distance relationship with his girlfriend Inga becomes increasingly complicated. And after several lonely nights partying on the corner bench, fruitless textile art and audio courses and failed attempts to ingratiate himself with his lecturers, Lennart reflects on his life for the first time.
Other roles are played by Målin Uschkureit, Ulrike Winkelmann, Valentin Emil Lubberberger and guest stars from TV, music and the world of influencers. The cast includes Dominique Horwitz (VERRÜCKT NACH PARIS, STALINGRAD), SPOTLIGHT all-star Chiara Tews as well as Karim Jamal and Sebastian Meinberg.

The series between university madness, generation self-realization and great art is a production of UFA Serial Drama on behalf of MDR in cooperation with ARD Kultur for the ARD Mediathek. Producer is Helga Löbel, producer is Claudia Danne. The authors, main actors and directors of IRGENDWAS MIT MEDIEN are Jano Kaltenbach and Mirko Muhshoff. The editors at MDR are Roman Twork and Barbara Butscher. The mockumentary was supported in its development by “Formate aus Thüringen” and also in its production by the Thuringian State Chancellery. Filming took place in Weimar in 2022, including at the Bauhaus University Weimar. IRGENDWAS MIT MEDIEN was the first UFA production to receive the “green motion” label for compliance with minimum ecological standards. In February 2023, the series was also awarded the Eisvogel Prize for sustainable film productions.
