The emotional and visually stunning epic film THE MEDICUS, starring Tom Payne and Ben Kingsley, was the cinema event of 2013 alongside FACK JU GÖHTE. The production was one of the few great unfilmed historical novels of recent decades – UFA acquired the film rights to the material that was once considered unfilmable and managed to successfully adapt the historical novel into a film. DER MEDICUS captivated over 3.6 million moviegoers in Germany alone and was sold in over 60 countries. The film reached 7.51 million viewers at its TV premiere in December 2014.
Now comes the long-awaited sequel to the story of the young doctor Rob Cole, played by Tom Payne (THE MEDICUS, THE WALKING DEAD, PRODIGAL SON), distributed by Constantin Film. The sequel is based on a story by Jan Berger and Philipp Stölzl. The screenplay was written by Stewart Harcourt, Philipp Stölzl, Caroline Bruckner as well as Jan Berger and Marc o. Seng. Philipp Stölzl (DER MEDICUS, GOETHE!, SCHACHNOVELLE) is once again directing.
The second part of the medieval epic, THE MEDICUS 2, will be released in German cinemas on December 25, 2025. Filming will begin in fall 2024.
THE MEDICUS
England in the 11th century – Rob Cole has an extraordinary gift: as a young boy, he senses that his sick mother is going to die and has to watch helplessly as his premonition comes true. Left to his own devices, the young orphan joins a traveling bather who teaches him the basics of medieval medicine as well as the usual sleight of hand. Even as an apprentice, Rob recognizes the limits of these simple practices. One day, he learns about the famous polymath Ibn Sina, who teaches medicine in faraway Persia, and decides to train as a doctor there. Along the way, Rob encounters countless dangers and challenges, has to make sacrifices and fight his way unconditionally. In the end, his unwavering pursuit of knowledge is rewarded with friendship and true love.

DER MEDICUS 2 is a Wolf Bauer / Philipp Stölzl production and is being produced by Zeitsprung Pictures GmbH and UFA Fiction with Tom Payne as executive producer. Other co-producers and partners are Constantin Film Produktion, Prime Video, ZDF and Beta Cinema, who are also handling world sales. The film is supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and the German Federal Film Board (FFA).
