ROSENSTOLZ – LIEBE IST ALLES (original title)

UFA DOCUMENTARY • Documentary & Factual • Das Erste • December 8, 2021

Rosenstolz are one of the most successful German pop acts of the last few decades: four million records sold, five number 1 albums, stadium tours and years of constant presence on radio and music television. Then things suddenly went quiet for the pioneers of contemporary German pop. Rosenstolz will be 30 years old this year. And even though the band no longer exists, they have not been forgotten. In the four-part UFA documentary series ROSENSTOLZ – LIEBE IST ALLES, AnNa R., Peter Plate and Ulf Leo Sommer talk for the first time in twelve years about dreams of ascent and fears of falling, love and friendship, stage fright and burnout. Private, previously unseen recordings offer a different view of life as a pop star and close companions, colleagues and friends have their say, including music producer Tom Müller, Inga Humpe, Sarah Connor, Tim Renner and many more.

ROSENSTOLZ – LIEBE IST ALLES will be available to stream in the ARD media library from December 8, 2021. On December 26, the 90-minute documentary LEGENDEN – ROSENSTOLZ can also be seen on MDR at 9.50 pm.

Rosenstolz: “We were asked again and again whether we would be interested in a documentary about Rosenstolz. Our answer was always the same: no, because everything has already been said about us. But this time it was different: when Marc Lepetit and Tim Evers presented us with their idea of pursuing a concept that would tell the story of Rosenstolz through the 90s and 00s in the context of the social changes that were taking place in this country, we were immediately convinced. We fell in love with this project so much that we suddenly wanted to be an active part of this documentary. This interview is the first one we’ve done together in twelve years. It felt like coming home.”

Marc Lepetit, producer and managing director of UFA Documentary: “Talking to AnNa R., Peter Plate and Ulf Sommer is always a wild mix of music, contemporary history, humor and a lot of emotion. Our series and the film want to portray exactly that – for fans, but even more so for those who could become fans and are also interested in this special time for the band. Director Tim Evers has not only told the story of the three with subtle questions, but also created space for contemporary witnesses, friends and colleagues to talk about the band and the musicians. In the end, you learn to love the band, understand the story behind it and hopefully feel that love really was everything with Rosenstolz.”

Peter Dreckmann, Head of Entertainment at MDR: “Rosenstolz were role models, trailblazers, encouragers and lived diversity long before it was a trendy word. When a band like this wants to do a documentary project with a broadcaster ten years after their break-up, it’s a gift. I am very grateful that Anna, Peter and Ulf made this series with MDR. Now we are passing this gift on to all those who have grown up or grown old with Rosenstolz. I am sure that many people will love this gift.”

ROSENSTOLZ – LIEBE IST ALLES is about much more than a band and its path to fame. Rosenstolz have moved hearts, shaped lives, encouraged people to be themselves. They were a role model, an encourager, a source of inspiration. Their audience was made up of East and West, gay and straight, shrill and quiet: drag queens, investment bankers and housewives – lived diversity at a time when that was far from being a trendy word. Rosenstolz had the courage to write German songs when everything was in English. They laid their hearts on the table when it was cool to be ironic, filled a gap and paved the way for a new generation of German pop music. Until 2011 is the end. The series also tells of the price that such a life as a “trailblazer” can cost: About two people who didn’t hide their fears, but brought them to the stage. Anna and Peter became pop stars, but they were never invincible superheroes. They remained approachable and vulnerable. That made them strong and fragile at the same time. Rosenstolz – that means closeness, openness and the courage to express feelings.
