Potsdam, October 22, 2025. Kids’ birthday parties are the best, aren’t they? At her brother’s chic country villa, single mother Marlene Frischmann (Jeanne Goursaud) has organized the perfect children’s birthday party for her son Theo (Levin Wopp): balloons, gluten-free cake, a piñata, and even wild animals are all set to make for an unforgettable day. But the lovingly planned party quickly escalates into a hilarious nightmare, complete with heated debates about parenting, notions of masculinity, and parental principles. Not entirely blameless for the chaos are Marlene’s boorish banker brother Timo (Edin Hasanović), her eccentric and out-of-touch father Hans (Heiner Lauterbach), her colleague and idealistic do-gooder Jenny (Amal Keller), and a very special gift. Amid dysfunctional family structures, overbearing helicopter moms, and childish anarchy, the party descends further and further into chaos.
Filming has wrapped in Berlin on the biting yet heartwarming ensemble comedy *DAS GESCHENK*. Director Vanessa Jopp helmed the film—produced by UFA Fiction and based on a screenplay by Ben Brooks—with Jeanne Goursaud, Edin Hasanović, and Heiner Lauterbach in the lead roles. Eric Bouley serves as executive producer, and Antonia Matthes is the producer. Bernhard Jasper handled the cinematography, and Christian Schäfer is responsible for production design. The cast also includes Sogol Faghani, Berit Künnecke, Enzo Brumm, and Bastian Reiber, among others.
THE GIFT (AT) is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
