The docu-soap VON HECKE ZU HECKE – BUNTE BEETGESCHICHTEN first started with 15 episodes of the first season on May 22, 2023 and brought the bed stories from the Bornholm allotment garden site in the middle of Berlin to the screens.

The second season, consisting of 25 episodes, told more fascinating stories from the Bornholm allotment garden site in Berlin from April 8, 2024. A historic site with 400 green garden plots directly on the former border strip of the Berlin Wall. In this season, viewers get to know the most colorful group of “nerd gardeners”, the famous cactus man and the lovable garden grandma.

UFA Show & Factual produces in-house developed docu-soap VON HECKE ZU HECKE - BUNTE BEETGESCHICHTEN for the first time in Mannheim for RTLZWEI

Off to the allotment gardens! The popular docu-soap VON HECKE ZU HECKE – BUNTE BEETGESCHICHTEN starts its third season and puts Mannheim’s allotment garden culture in the spotlight for the first time.

From 24.03.2025, RTLZWEI will be showing the stories of the allotment gardeners of two
sites – Mannheim Süd, the largest allotment garden site in Baden-Württemberg, and Mannheim Waldhof, in the immediate vicinity of the legendary Benzbaracken.

Sarah Ofer, Junior Producer at UFA Show & Factual: “After two successful seasons in Berlin, we are delighted to now also show the allotment garden culture of Mannheim in all its facets with our self-developed docu-soap VON HECKE ZU HECKE – BUNTE
BEETGESCHICHTEN. Mannheim is not unfamiliar territory for UFA
Show & Factual – we already have close ties here through our social documentary HARTZ UND HERZLICH. So it’s all the better that we can now also tell the personal and colorful stories of Mannheim’s allotment gardeners.”

A look behind the hedges of the allotment gardeners

In the third season of VON HECKE ZU HECKE – BUNTE BEETGESCHICHTEN, everything revolves around the colorful goings-on in two allotment garden sites in Mannheim. With a lot of
passion, creativity and team spirit, spring is heralded in the plots – and with it the diverse stories of the allotment gardeners.

Sportsman Daniel is still at the beginning of his gardening adventure. After rebuilding his plot with the active support of his family and friends, he now has to build a fence. This often requires a talent for improvisation!

Master baker Jürgen and his better half Marion have been cherishing their green happiness together for many years. The pensioner is also actively involved in the association as an allotment gardener with a heart.

As the first chairman in Mannheim South, all-rounder Alex is a man in demand and often out and about in other gardens. His wife Bianca takes it with a sense of humor and can rely on the support of garden neighbor Uwe.

The plot of land belonging to power couple Enikö and Wendelin resembles a pink paradise, where the two never tire of tackling new tasks.

Frank and Manuela’s football-mad family also have a lot to do: together with their children Lara and Kalli, they get their garden in shape, while family dog Lumpi keeps a watchful eye on the action.

Waldhof’s garden manager Markus is considered a doer and makes every effort to realize the garden wishes of his partner Inka. The two got to know and love each other through the allotment garden association.

The amateur gardeners love their little green oases in their very own way, support and help each other and, as true “Monnemers”, have their hearts and mouths in the right place.

A look at the allotment gardeners in the second season
The second season of VON HECKE ZU HECKE – BUNTE BEETGESCHICHTEN is all about the stories of the allotment gardeners and their painstakingly and lovingly tended beds.
Allotment gardener Christian and his children Arian and Fiona have embarked on an ambitious project in the middle of the site: the complete renovation of the stairs to the pergola roof. Will they succeed in overcoming this challenge as a family?

There is also a new addition to the site: Family man Mehmet and his wife are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their third child, who is already being welcomed as a garden baby.
For pensioner Ingrid, on the other hand, the 15 hectares of the allotment site have long been a familiar home. She socializes here and is never alone. Whether it’s cactus fan Hajo, her friends Renate and Lothar or her senior citizens’ group – everyone is welcome in Ingrid’s garden.

The highlight of the Bornheim gardens, the joint harvest festival with all the allotment gardeners, once again underlines how much they learn from and help each other. In Berlin’s largest inner-city allotment garden site, the focus is not only on gardening, but also on a colorful community based on solidarity and cohesion.

Our allotment gardeners

The allotment gardeners are as diverse as their stories – whether they are long-standing plot owners or allotment garden newcomers, whether they are 85 years or one year old, whether they are car mechanics or turbine crane operators, tourist guides or fashion designers, students or Tagesspiegel authors, pensioners or late-night shop owners. Everyone in the Bornholm gardens has their own story. But our allotment garden fans all have one thing in common: their passion for their allotment garden plots.

For the new docu-soap, the UFA Show & Factual camera teams followed the allotment gardeners for 24 weeks in spring, summer and fall 2022. The result is 15 episodes that give an insight into life on the Berlin allotment site in an entertaining 45 minutes.
