Huge open-cast mining holes are transformed into vacation paradises, gigantic lakes become recreational areas: NEUES LAND tells of dark secrets and unresolved problems against the backdrop of geological and socio-political changes in the former open-cast mining areas of East Germany. Directed by Esther Rauch, Jördis Triebel, Jörg Schüttauf and Ronald Zehrfeld starred alongside Lucy Gartner in this family story in front of Mario Minichmayr’s camera.
After many years, geologist Ina Sedlitz (Jördis Triebel) returns to her home village of Neukirch – a place that has been transformed from a former lignite mining area into a popular tourist destination. Ina only wants one thing: to transfer her inheritance of the family hotel to her niece Mara (Lucy Gartner) and finally put the past behind her. But when she is asked to draw up a geological survey for the man-made lake, she comes across dangerous instabilities – and the shadows of a long-suppressed family secret. As Mara begins to ask uncomfortable questions, the family’s carefully guarded silence begins to waver. Ina is faced with a decision that changes everything – for her, for Mara and for an entire village.
