1950 in Stuttgart geboren, studierte Wolf Bauer Publizistik und Kunstgeschichte in München und Berlin (Abschluss Magister Artium, Summa cum laude). Er arbeitete ab 1976 zunächst als Autor von politischen Magazin-Beiträgen für die ZDF-Sendung „Kennzeichen D“.

1980 kam Wolf Bauer als Redakteur und Producer zur UFA Film- und Fernsehproduktion und ist seit 1991 Produzent und Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung der UFA Film & TV Produktion. Seit Gründung der FremantleMedia im Jahre 2000 ist er überdies im Operating Board des weltweit tätigen Produktionsunternehmens. Die FremantleMedia ist der internationale Produktionsarm der RTL Group, zu dem auch die UFA gehört.

Unter seiner Führung entwickelte sich die UFA zu einer leistungsstarken Produktionsgruppe mit sieben Tochtergesellschaften, die in den vergangenen Jahren ihre Marktführerschaft in Deutschland als Film- und Fernsehproduzent kontinuierlich ausgebaut hat. Als Chef der UFA gründete Wolf Bauer 1991 gemeinsam mit dem australischen Gameshow- und Daily Drama Pionier Reg Grundy die Grundy UFA und formte sie zusammen mit Mike Murphy zu Europas größtem Produzenten für Daily Drama. 1998 schuf er mit Prof. Nico Hofmann und Ariane Krampe teamWorx, das sich mit der Produktion hochwertiger TV Movies und Fiction Programme mit Event Charakter innerhalb von 6 Jahren unter den Top 5 der deutschen Fernsehproduzenten etablierte. Zuletzt gründete er im Frühjahr 2008 gemeinsam mit Thomas Peter Friedl, Prof. Nico Hofmann und Dr. Jürgen Schuster die UFA Cinema, die er als Mitglied der Geschäftsführung und Produzent leitet.

Von 2001 bis 2007 war Wolf Bauer im Vorstand von film20, Interessengemeinschaft Filmproduktion, ebenfalls seit 2001 ist er Mitglied des Beirat Ost der Deutschen Bank sowie Vorsitzender des Beirates des Erich-Pommer-Institutes. Seit 2008 gehört Wolf Bauer dem Kuratorium der Bertelsmann Stiftung sowie dem Gesamtvorstand der Allianz deutscher Produzenten an.

Wolf Bauer produzierte seit 1980 über 80 TV-Movies, darunter „Der Snob“ (ZDF, 1983, Regie: Wolfgang Staudte), „Das Haus am Watt“ (ZDF, 1989, Regie: Sigi Rothemund), „Katharina die Große“ (1994, ZDF, Regie: Marvin Chomsky) mit Catherine Zeta-Jones in der Titelrolle, „The Mall“ (1997, Regie: Norberto Barba) und Episoden so erfolgreicher Reihen wie „Ein unvergessliches Wochenende in…“ oder die Verfilmungen von Erzählungen Rosamunde Pilchers. Außerdem produzierte Wolf Bauer acht Spielfilme, darunter „Der Schnüffler“ (1982), „Didi – Der Doppelgänger“ (1983), „Didi und die Rache der Enterbten“ (1984), „Der Experte“.
Überdies ist Wolf Bauer für den Start von über 20 Serien produzentisch verantwort-lich. Dazu gehören wöchentlichen Serien für öffentlich rechtliche Sender wie „Detektivbüro Roth“ (1983, WWF), „Der Untermieter“ (1983/1984, ZDF), „Berliner Weiße mit Schuss“ (1984, ZDF) und „Der Millionenerbe“ (1989, ZDF), beide mit Gunther Pfitzmann, oder eine der ersten Sitcoms im deutschen Fernsehen „Die lieben Verwandten“ (1989, WDR) und die erste echte Weekly „Hinter Gittern – Der Frauenknast“ (1997, RTL). Aber auch tägliche Serien wie „Gute Zeiten – Schlechte Zeiten“ (seit 1992, RTL), „Unter uns“ (seit 1994, RTL), „Verbotene Liebe“ (seit 1994, ARD) sowie die Telenovelas „Bianca – Wege zum Glück“ (2004, ZDF) und „Verliebt in Berlin“ (2005, Sat.1) entstanden unter seiner Führung.
Für UFA Cinema produziert Wolf Bauer „Der Medicus“, „Glennkill“ und „Vaterland“. Überdies ist er Executive Produzent von „Teufelskicker“, „Hanni und Nanni“, „Tauben auf dem Dach“ und „Dschungelkind“.

Born in Stuttgart in 1950, Wolf Bauer studied Journalism and History of Art in Munich and Berlin (graduating with M.A. honours). He initially began working from 1976 as a political features writer for the ZDF programme "Kennzeichen D".

In 1980, Wolf Bauer came to UFA Film- und Fernsehproduktion as an editor and producer and has served as executive producer and CEO for UFA Film & TV Produktion since 1991. Since the founding of FremantleMedia in 2000, he has also sat on the operating board of this globally active production company. FremantleMedia is the international production arm of the RTL Group which also includes UFA.

Under his leadership, UFA has developed into a highly efficient production group with seven subsidiaries which have continuously expanded their leading market position as a film and television producer in Germany in recent years. As head of UFA, Wolf Bauer founded Grundy UFA in 1991 with Reg Grundy, the Australian gameshow and daily drama pioneer. Together with Mike Murphy, the two turned it into Europe's largest producer of daily dramas. In 1998, he joined forces with Prof. Nico Hofmann and Ariane Krampe to set up teamWorx which established itself within six years to become one of the Top 5 German producers with the production of quality TV movies and fiction programmes with event character. In early 2008, he founded UFA Cinema with Thomas Peter Friedl, Prof. Nico Hofmann and Dr.Jürgen Schuster and serves as CEO and producer.

From 2001 to 2007, Wolf Bauer was on the board of film20, an interest group for film production. He has also been a member since 2001 of the Advisory Board East for the Deutsche Bank and the chairman of the advisory board for the Erich Pommer Institut. Since 2008, Wolf Bauer has belonged to the board of trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation and the board of the German Producers Alliance (Allianz deutscher Produzenten).
